The Truth About Detox Diets

The Truth About Detox Diets

I think we have all come across some sort of diet promising to ‘detox’ your body to get rid of toxins, boost metabolism, and lose pounds. Which might work short term but you will end up gaining the weight back and hurting your metabolism even more. A lot of these diets are designed to get rid of water weight quickly, which looks great when you step on the scale initially! But your body needs that water. If you drink water consistently and you get enough everyday, your body won’t hold onto that extra water anyway.

Take the “Master Cleanse” diet for example. This detox promises amazing results in just 10 days. The problem is this ‘lemonade’ mixture of pure maple syrup, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and water is all you consume for ten days. The diet suggests that the 3 days before your start date you begin eating less food to prepare your stomach. That is insanity! Your body needs calories to function.

Does anyone watch The Office? Kelly tried this diet when the Office was in a contest to lose weight. I’m pretty sure this is an accurate look at what you’ll be like on this cleanse:

Miserable. Miserable. Miserable.

The same can be said about juicing fads. Drinking only juices, even if you mix them yourself at home, is not the way to get a healthy body. You aren’t consuming the calories you need, and you aren’t getting all the micro and macro nutrients you need.

The thing that we all need to remember is that your body knows how to detox itself, naturally. What you need to do is make sure you are eating lots of fresh fruits, veggies, and lean meats, and make sure you are drinking lots of water. Add this healthy diet in with regular exercise and your body will be working hard to detox itself, and you will end up losing pounds the right way.

There is a small checklist you should go through to find out if a diet isn’t worth your time; it gives unrealistic promises, you are eating the bare minimum for calories or not enough calories, and you are cutting out entire food groups. A healthy diet should promote healthy food choices! Check out these tips so you can spot fad diets!

You do not need a detox before you start a healthy diet or weight loss program. The healthy diet or weight loss program IS the detox!

No doctor, medical professional, or qualified nutrition will suggest a detox diet to you because they are unhealthy. Plus, you end up going through withdrawals, you will have very low energy because your body doesn’t have enough calories to function, you will end up with headaches or migraines, and you will just be miserable all around!
