Last Saturday me and my friends ran another mudrun/obstacle run. I think we are obsessed at this point. I am already trying to find MORE for us to do in 2016!! Mudd Sweat and Tears was our latest run and it was definitely the most challenging!
I wish I had exact numbers but I’m going to go ahead and guess that about 3.5km of this run was trail running – which was awesome. If you love trail running you would have LOVED Mudd, Sweat, and Tears in Fredericton! Most of the running was right at the beginning and I would say we ran 3km before getting to obstacles.
There were 3 different walls we had to scale. Tim had to boost us over them, I couldn’t even reach the top. It’s a good thing he is so tall! There were also two barbed wire pits to crawl through, monkey bars, mud pits, a tire pull, sand buckets we had to haul through the woods, and a few more obstacles.
One of the obstacles was a large wooden ‘A frame’, with one side being plywood with a large rope attached, and the other side was a ladder to climb down. What you had to do was hold on to the rope while walking up the plywood, once you got to the top of the A frame you had to get to the other side to climb down the ladder. It was hard to reach the top while holding onto the rope.
My sister Becky and I both tried first and we got stuck. I came down right away to try and figure out how to transition myself from holding the rope, to grabbing the top to pull myself over. Becky held on and tried to get over but she ended up slipping and sliding all the way down. The plywood has a 2×4 attached to it so you can get your footing when you are a 1/3 of the way up. She slid down and hit her hip, it was all bruised and swollen! In the end, I climbed back up and Tim was waiting at the top for Becky and I. He said ‘I’m just gonna grab your arm and pull.’ And that’s what he did. He pulled me up so I could grab the top and pull myself over. For Becky he stood on the 2×4 and helped boost her feet up while Person was on the other side to help her over.
The course was 5km long. We had signed up for the 10km run so we got to do the course twice!
This race was definitely the most physically demanding and really reminded me that I need to work on my upper body strength. We were sore for the next few days! I didn’t experience that after the other mudruns! I don’t mind though, it means I worked hard!
I really hope there is another Mudd, Sweat, and Tears race in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia next year! I can’t wait to do it again!
